When La Jolla randomly decides it’s summer in March and Bishop’s campus hits 80 degrees by noon, it’s impossible to focus on anything except getting off campus (after school, of course) and cooling down. Suddenly, everyone’s talking about beach plans, tanning on the library terrace, and most importantly, what the best cold treat is within walking distance of Bishop’s. So, in honor of the need for something refreshing after a full day of classes, I, Isabelle, set out to find the best cool treats around Bishop’s. From classic ice cream to fruitier options, I tried four popular spots. If you’ve been debating what to try on a hot day, this one’s for you!
1: Frutitude’s Matcha Slush with Boba
This is a go-to if you want something both refreshing and a little more interesting than a basic iced tea. The drink itself has a smooth, earthy matcha flavor that wasn’t too sweet. The slush texture makes it feel more like a treat than a drink, and the boba added a chewy contrast that made it fun to sip. That said, if you’re not a huge matcha person, the richness of the matcha may make it a heavier treat. Overall, it’s a really solid option, especially when you want something refreshing that is a little more unique and flavorful. 2: Burger Lounge’s Chocolate Milkshake
Next up, I tried the chocolate milkshake from Burger Lounge after hearing a lot about it from fellow Bishopians. If you’re looking for something rich and satisfying, this is a good move. The milkshake is super thick and creamy, with a deep chocolate flavor that feels more dessert than drink. It’s not as light or refreshing as something icy, but it would hit if you’re craving something indulgent and filling while still cool. It’s the kind of treat you’d get when you’re more in the mood for comfort rather than just a cool down, because it’s so rich. But don’t get me wrong, the taste was still really good. Rating: 3.5/5 Price: $6.95 (Large) Walking Time from Bishop’s: 13 minutes (Isabelle Banaie)
3: Bobboi Natural Gelato’s Strawberry Gelato
For something lighter and fresher, I stopped by Bobboi. This gelato felt the most summery out of everything I tried. The strawberry flavor tastes super fresh and natural, not artificial at all, which makes it really refreshing in the heat. Compared to the milkshake, it is lighter and easier to enjoy on a hot day, especially if you’re walking around La Jolla after school. It’s one of those treats that actually cools you down without feeling too heavy, which makes it stand out compared to some of the richer options. Additionally, it was dairy-free! Rating: 5/5 Price: $6.50 (piccolo size) Walking Time from Bishop’s: 12 minutes (Isabelle Banaie)
4: Blue Whale’s Blue Whale Bowl
And finally, I tried the açaí bowl from Blue Whale, a good option if you want something that feels both refreshing and a little healthier. The bowl is served with an açaí base and topped with strawberries, banana, blueberries, almonds, cacao nibs, goji berries, hemp seeds, honey, and a drizzle of peanut butter. It has a really good balance of flavors and texture, and the fruit made it fresh, while the granola added some crunch and made it more filling. It’s definitely more of a meal than just a quick treat, which is great if you’re hungry after school. It’s not as instantly cooling as something like a slush or gelato, but it still hits on a hot day. Rating: 4.5/5 Price: $13 (small) Walking Time from Bishop’s: 5 minutes (Isabelle Banaie)
