You’ve seen copies of The Tower around campus, you’ve gotten the weekly newsletters, and you’ve received the interview requests — but do you know what the process is to actually pitch, research, write, edit, and eventually publish an article? The first step is joining the Bishop’s Journalism class, but what then?
On pitching day, the staff gathers together to share article ideas, and like any school assignment, it consists of two types of people: those who have had an idea for weeks and those who came up with one during Milk Break. Fortunately, this day is all about workshopping and making sure every idea has a clear direction and potential, and that all starts with a five-sentence pitch. Every member of The Tower writes out their pitch, including a lede (or hook, something to draw the reader in), an angle (what the article will focus on), relevance (why they should report on it), possible interviewees (more will be suggested during pitching!), and anything else that the writer finds interesting. Once the class discusses the idea and gives feedback and suggestions, it is off to the next step!
