Ms. Bryn Bishop, a physics specialist with a passion for STEM and astronomy, has recently joined the Bishop’s community, bringing a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to our school. She is a teacher of ninth-grade Conceptual Physics Enriched and Honors Physics. In addition, Ms. Bishop is also a dedicated and caring advisor for a class of 2028. Before teaching at Bishop’s, Ms. Bishop worked in a diverse range of educational settings, teaching at Westview High School for almost five years, then at Canyon Crest Academy for about four years, and then serving as a Senior Physics Curriculum Developer at AoPS (Art of Problem Solving) for three years. She is thrilled to join Bishop’s and we are thrilled to have her!
Q: Can you share how you first became passionate about physics and when you wanted to teach it?
“When I was an undergraduate, I thought I would be a history major… But I didn’t enjoy writing essays and I really liked doing math a lot more — I would rather do pages and pages of math than write essays. Then I took astronomy and I completely fell in love with it. Everything about it was so interesting and fun. I love studying the universe, studying the stars and planets, and studying supermassive black holes. I ended up doing research in supermassive black holes. I like the fact that with LIGO, we can hear black holes colliding from billions and billions of miles away. In college, I also took chemistry; in my chemistry class, I realized that everything I loved about chemistry was actually physics. So, I switched my major to be a physics major.”
Q: What are your impressions of Bishop’s up to this point?
“The food is amazing… The students are wonderful, the resources are fantastic, and I love all the lab equipment that we have here. It’s really beautiful and lovely here. All the people are so friendly, everyone’s so nice, and everyone’s very patient with me as I learn Blackbaud.”
Q: What contributions do you hope to make at Bishop’s?
“One of the things that I’ve noticed is that the upper-level physics classes aren’t as diverse as the school population. So I’m really hoping that by teaching ninth-grade physics I will inspire more students to take upper-level physics classes. I’m hoping that they will see how physics can be so fun and helpful for whatever they want to do in the future. Hopefully, Bishop’s students can see that studying physics can enrich their lives in terms of anything they want to do.”
Q: What are your interests and hobbies outside of teaching?
“I love going to the beach. My biggest hobbies are probably photography and driving my kids around. And I do astronomy, so I have a bunch of telescopes. I also love camping.”
Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with the Bishop’s community?
“I am so excited to be here! I love meeting all of the motivated students. At the club fair, seeing all the different clubs and what students are excited about was very exciting to me.”
All in all, we extend a warm welcome to Ms. Bishop!
