In the midst of welcoming a bustling autumn season, the evening of September 21 was another fulfilling Back to School Knight for Bishop’s. Previously called Parent’s Night of Classes, and now cleverly named Back to School Knight (BTSK), this annual event strives to give parents the opportunity “to understand a part of their students’ lives at school,” Spanish Teacher Sra. Nicole Uhland said.
As Math Teacher Mrs. Jennifer Seymour said, “BTSK is often the only chance parents have to meet teachers in person and experience what their kids do every day; since most parents are pretty far removed from the school experience.” For Mr. Christopher Carrol (Bex Keller-Carroll ‘29), the excitement around BTSK revolves around seeing and hearing his son’s school life “because he doesn’t tell me anything.” This is the one night of the year where parents such as Mr. Carrol “get to understand what [Bex’s] day is like.”
On BTSK, parents get a taste of the discoveries their children make on the daily. Ms. Jeane de Freitas and Mr. Robert Wicke (Jake Wicke ‘25) appreciated hearing about the “different methodologies that [her son’s teacher] used to teach Spanish: through food, through art, [and more.]” They also admired the variety of classics and modern literature taught in their son’s English class.
For Ms. Blythe and Tony Newlin (Reese Newlin ‘26), they especially loved the social justice class, taught by the Reverend Nicole Simopoulos-Pigato, wishing “it was a required class for everyone.” All parents such as Ms. Carolyn Ryan-Furrows and Mr. Michael Ryan (Christopher Ryan ‘26) just wanted “to see the school at night, the teachers, the actual classes, and get an overall view of what it is his day is like.”
Hopefully, after a long night of classes, parents experienced the daily schedules of their children and are able to utilize Bishop’s as a way to connect with their interests and lives. As Science Teacher Mr. Anthony Pelletier, more commonly known as Doc, said, at the end of the day, BTSK should “prompt a conversation [on school subjects] with their child.”
